Magic: the Gathering can be an expensive hobby. Not everyone can afford to keep up with Standard and acquire playsets of all the newest staples, such as Jace, the Mindsculptor. The vast majority of casual Magic: the Gathering players (who make far more purchases than tournament players) are on a budget and might only participate in a prerelease event and a few of drafts for each set. Magic: The Gathering is a collectible card game (CCG) that was created by Richard Garfield in early 1993. In simplicity, it's a game that combines the strategy and intellectualism of chess with the wit and cunning of poker. In reality mastering Magic: the Gathering it is more complex than chess and poker combined. The pieces of a chess board are static, do not change, and there is only a finite number of opening moves and counter moves. Magic: the Gathering is in a constant state of flux and ever expanding with each new expansion set - providing near infinite pieces, moves, and possibilities. There are many signs in Magic: the Gathering to read, and not all of them are during game play. In fact if one looks closely then he or she can interpret the signs in Magic: the Gathering that their opponents tell them - before the first card is even played.

The premise of Risen is that you've survived a shipwreck and landed on a beach of the strange and mysterious island of Faranga. Temples have "Risen" up all over the Faranga island, and monsters have begun to appear. As you explore the island of Faranga, you will run across two different factions- the Rebels and the Inquisition. Alien Breed for Xbox Live Arcade is an eerie top-down shooter with simple controls that anyone can master, using the industry-renowned Unreal 3 Engine. It is also one of the better looking arcade games available on Xbox Live. The game features a story mode, free play mode, and a co-op mode for players to dip into. As far as XBox Live Arcade games are concerned, Alien Breed is one of the better choices available - however, there are a lot of minor flaws that can add up and detract its enjoyment.

Masticore joins Phrexian Negator in being reprinted from the Reserved List. For those who missed it, last Thursday Wizards of the Coast dropped a bombshell on Magic: the Gathering players when a leaked image that contained Phrexian Negator as being included in the upcoming Duel Decks: Phryexia vs The Coalition.

The reason that this was a big deal is because it breaks the reprint policy that Wizards has upheld for so long (aside from Judge promos).

"On February 18th, PS3 and PSP owners will be able to download and watch a new reality show from the PlayStation store called "The Tester". The Tester is a reality show where eleven gamers compete for the chance to become an official game tester for PlayStation.

2009 was a good year for Magic: the Gathering players. There were many exciting new releases. It all began in January with Conflux. Alara Reborn came out in April, and M10 in the summer. In August Magic players went crazy trying to get their hands on a copy of From the Vault: Exiled - and some were lucky to get it at retail price. September introduced us to the latest block Zendikar, and also gave us the new Planechase varient. September also yielded Masters Edition III for Magic Online players. Two more special releases came out, in the form of Garruk vs. Liliana and Premium Deck Series: Slivers. The year then drew to a close with Exodus being released to Magic Online.

New Year’s resolutions are often very cliché. Everyone's goal is often that they will “lose weight” or “find a better job”. It’s time that we make a few Magic: the Gathering resolutions and goals that everyone can accomplish with just a little determination.

Complete a Deck
It does not matter if the deck that one is working on is for casual or tournament play. There are likely one (or two) cards that you are missing from your ideal build. Finishing a deck is a great New Years resolution that can be achieved.

It does not matter if it is an easy to acquire card in Standard, or hard to find staple such for a Legacy or Vintage deck that you‘ve been tinkering with. Trading for (or buying) that last card to finish a Magic deck will bring a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Christmas Shopping for Video Games

With Christmas in ten days, it was time that I finally did my Christmas shopping. What did I get and where did I go? Well, I can't tell specifically what I bought, however I did take advantage of the buy 2, get 1 free sale going on at Gamestop on the used video games. The presents look nice underneath our artificial Christmas tree.

Unfortunately, I had already bought a few used video games a couple weeks ago for my gorgeous girlfriend. That iddn't stop me from picking up three more games that will be sure to delight her Christmas morning.

Anybody else who still needs to do Christmas shopping and has a gamer to buy for, I suggest checking out your local Gamestop.

The question remains, who will get to use the television to play first?

According to IMDB.com, Steven Spielberg is producing Halo (the major Xbox 360 video game franchise), and it will make the leap onto the big screen sometime in 2012. Until then, and barring the end of the world, here are the top ten futuristic action movies that everyone should see:

Alien (1979)
When an SOS signal is picked up by a mining spaceship, the crew decides to investigate. Three crew members discover an abandoned spaceship with hundreds of weird alien eggs inside. After being disturbed, one of the eggs hatches an attacks a crew member.

Alien is an original heart pounding futuristic action movie. At the core, Alien is a horror movie, however it deserves its place on this list of top ten action movies because it spawns one of the biggest futuristic action movie franchises.

Alien was directed by Ridley Scott and written by Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett. Alien also won an Oscar and eleven other film awards.

My Girlfriend just bought a Wii !

My girlfriend Jaime and I are gamers that work on a budget.

When she recieved a hefty amount of cash for her birthday, and a small but nice Christmas bonus from her work, she decided to buy a Wii.

We had wanted to buy a Wii last year, however at the time XBox 360 seemed like a better choice (plus we got a sweet deal on one).

She purchased Wii Sports Resort, Mario Party 8, an additional controller with Motion Plus, and Wii Fit Plus.

We played Mario Party 8, and were unimpressed. I will be returning it today, and picking up Super Mario Galaxy.

We both had a blast playing Wii Sports Resort, and she had fun using the Wii Fit Plus.

While the Wii will by no means replace our XBox 360 when it comes to playing single player games, it by all means has become the center of attention for multiplayer.

Andre Coimbra wins Magic: the Gathering Worlds 2009 Rome

Four hundred and eight of the most talented Magic: the Gathering players from over fifty different countries competed in the 2009 World Championships in Rome. The tournament was four days long, and in the end Andre Coimbra from Portugal would beat David Reitbauer from Austria, to end up being named the World Champion.

Although the judge foil Sol Ring has been out for quite some time now, I finally had the chance to see one in person. I must say that it is a lot nicer than a Revised version. But how does a Judge Foil Sol Ring compare to an Alpha or Beta version?

Original Black Bordered vs. Foil
Many prefer to have the original black bordered version of Sol Ring, compared to the Judge Foil. There is a certain level of pride that can be had when playing an original version. It's also almost twice as expensive. Black Bordered Sol Rings can go anywhere from $60 to $100 depending on the dealer. A Judge Foil Sol Ring can be purchased from between $30 to $50.

Between the difference in price, and the cleaned up wording, the Judge Foil Sol Ring is a clear winner in my eyes.

Quest for the Gravelord
Limited is all about creatures and removal, and Zendikar is no exception. Quest for the Gravelord is an amazing early drop in any limited deck. In later turns it can still be relevant, but it is certainly not an answer. Black’s uncommons in Zendikar are very situational. While Gatekeeper of Malakir is another strong black uncommon, its prohibiting tripple black casting cost is what puts Quest for the Gravelord on this list of top ten uncommons in Zendikar.

Grand Prix Tampa, going 6-3

I went 6-3 at Grand Prix Tampa, and although only one more win would have let me make it to day two of the vent I am happy with my results.

I was in 201st place out of 831 people (the top 25% of players), and I certainly didn't win so many matches with my card pool (to be posted later). Strong decisions and careful timing is what took me 6-3, and I'm sure if I had open one of the many broken pools that I would have had only two loses instead of three.

I did manage to pick up several beauties for my collection, including the Judge Promo Demonic Tutor, Judge Promo Regrowth, 4x DCI Hypnotic Specer, and an FNM Thirst for Knowledge

SnapIt Screen Capture makes taking screen shots a pinch

When playing Magic Online, it can quickly become cumbersome to keep copy pasting screenshots into paint or word and saving the files.

I downloaded and used SnapIt Screen Capture to record a 100 card singleton match using a new deck. Normally taking and saving screen shots would take from three to five minutes of work for each game. I was able to play the entire game while taking screen shots and saving them by pressing a hot key. They all were saved to a specified folder.

Here's how the game played out:

Winning the die roll, I opted to go first. A solid hand didn't hurt, and I led with a Sacred Foundry.

My opponent MFraizer started with a turn one Plains, Bonesplitter

Turn two I drew a Sunpetal Grove and played a Qurion Dryad

My opponent played a second turn Soltari Monk

Turn three I played Mishra's Factory and Sword of Fire and Ice, then swung with my Dryad for 1 damage.

My opponent missed another land drop, pretty much sealing the game in my favor. He did play a Spectral Lynx

Turn five I played Mogg Fanatic, giving Dryad a counter. I sacrificed the Fanatic to kill the Lynx. I turned Mishra's Factory into a creature, attacked and played Lightning Bolt to the face for the win

The deck still needs a lot of testing however it is a great start to a 100 card singleton Red Green White deck.

Thanks to SnapIt Screen Capture I was able to record the game without taking extra time away from game play. I would definately reccomend this program to anybody who likes to take screenshots of a game, be it Magic Online or otherwise. It also has many practical applications as well.

Normally I do not download and install utility programs however SnapIt Screen Capture is one of those few programs that I will actually keep installed on my computer, and I hope you will enjoy it too.

Online PTQ's an instant sucess for Wizards

Wizards of the Coast collected 14190 event tickets tonight from a total of 473 players in the first of many online PTQ's. While if one were to subtract the amount of product being opened for both the shootouts and the actual resulting ptq as well as the prizes, they would break event. However as virtual boosters do not cost money to produce unless they become redeemed, Wizards clearly made a tidy little profit. And that is good for both the players and Wizards.

If Wizards sees that holding online PTQ's are profitable in addition to paper PTQ's we may see more than this season's 16 events for Pro Tour San Diego. Not only does Wizards make more money, but it brings more attention to Magic Online. With more eyes looking on Magic Online, Wizards may finally start paying a lot more attention to it, fixing many of the things about the programs such as existing bugs with cards, as well as other things.

While playing in an PTQ on Magic Online offers a convenience factor, I'd personally rather play in person against a lesser amount of opponents.
